How Radiant Art Embraces Sustainability Through Print-on-Demand with Printful

At Radiant Art, we create graphic tees that celebrate memes, dinosaurs, nerdy humor, and everyday absurdity. We also care about the planet those designs live on. Fashion has a well-documented waste problem, and we choose partners and processes that actively work against it.

We fulfill nearly every order through Printful, a leading print-on-demand company. That partnership is the foundation of how we approach sustainability.

The Problem with Traditional Apparel Production

The apparel industry routinely overproduces. Roughly 21% of textiles made never get worn and often end up in landfills. Globally, tens of millions of tonnes of clothing are discarded or burned each year. Bulk manufacturing creates excess inventory that has to go somewhere - usually somewhere bad for the environment.

The Fast Fashion Epidemic | UCLA Sustainability

Print-on-demand flips that model. Nothing is printed until a customer places an order. No speculative stock. No warehouses full of unsold shirts. Every tee we sell is made because someone wanted that exact design.

How Printful’s Model Supports Lower Waste

Printful only produces after purchase. This single change eliminates the biggest source of textile waste in conventional retail. In addition:

  • Localized fulfillment - About 86% of Printful orders are fulfilled and shipped within the same region as the customer. Shorter distances mean lower shipping emissions and faster delivery.
  • High-quality materials and equipment - Printful invests in durable blanks and modern printing technology so garments last longer and get worn more, not discarded after a few washes.
  • Responsible printing - Direct-to-garment (DTG) and related methods use less water than traditional screen printing. Many of the inks involved are water-based. On our side, we highlight products printed with Kornit water-based and NeoPigment inks that carry Oeko-Tex certification, which supports both safety and reduced environmental impact. Poster prints use GREENGUARD Gold certified inks.

Materials and Eco-Friendly Options

Printful maintains a dedicated eco-friendly collection. Apparel in that range is made with at least 70% organic or recycled content (or a blend) and is backed by third-party certifications such as:

  • GOTS or OCS for organic materials
  • GRS or RCS for recycled content

These certifications track materials through the supply chain and set standards for environmental and social responsibility. We can and do offer designs on these more sustainable blanks when customers prefer them.

Packaging That Uses Recycled Content

Printful has shifted apparel packaging toward post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. Globally the minimum is 70% PCR content; in North America many facilities now use 90–100% PCR plastic for mailers. Poster packaging moved to triangle boxes without plastic caps years ago. Packaging also includes recycling information so customers can dispose of materials correctly.

Measuring and Improving Impact

In 2023, the average Printful product was associated with roughly 12.52 lbs (5.68 kg) of CO₂ emissions across its lifecycle (materials, production, shipping, and customer use). The majority of those emissions are indirect. Printful publishes greenhouse-gas inventory data, has completed a Double Materiality Assessment, and is working toward science-based reduction targets. They also partner with Sedex for ethical supply-chain mapping and require major suppliers to sign their Vendor Compliance Manual. 100% of major suppliers have done so.

Fabric scraps that still occur are increasingly repurposed rather than discarded (for example into other small products). Continuous improvement is part of their stated approach.

What This Means for Radiant Art Customers

When you order a shirt from us:

  • It is printed only after you buy it.

  • Eco-certified material options are available.
  • Printing methods and inks are chosen with lower environmental impact in mind compared with traditional bulk fashion production.

Saving Our Planet Together Celebrating Earth Day with Eco-Friendly Custom Designs

We are not claiming perfection. No clothing company is zero-impact. But by building the shop on Printful’s on-demand infrastructure, we avoid the largest waste stream in the industry and gain access to better materials, packaging, and ongoing improvements.

Sustainability is a process, not a badge. We will keep offering eco-friendly product options, be transparent about how our shirts are made, and update practices as Printful and the broader industry advance.

If you have questions about materials on a specific product, preferred eco blanks, or how we handle returns and packaging, just reach out. We’re happy to talk about it.

Thanks for supporting independent designs and a more thoughtful way of making them!

If you’ve been on the internet in the last few weeks, you’ve seen it: that icy stare, the long arm extended like she’s personally filing a complaint with the universe, and one very deliberate finger pointed directly at DeWanna Bonner.

Sophie Cunningham didn’t just point - she committed to the bit. And the WNBA (plus the rest of the internet) has been living for it ever since.

Amid the noise, grime, and rush-hour crowds of New York City subway stations, a simple white-chalk figure kept showing up: a crawling baby surrounded by bold, radiating lines of energy.
